As parents and residents of Alexandria for many years, we truly believe our city has a unique charm and magic due to its strong sense of community. Our vision for Bluemont Local emerged as we navigated major health challenges in our family and the difficulties of parenting two young children without nearby family support. This experience ignited a profound need for purpose, driving us to create a space where kids can feel a sense of belonging and parents do not feel alone. We feel lucky to combine this vision with our professional expertise in psychology, health and wellness, and child development to create an incredible space for children and families to play, learn, and connect!
Our modern lifestyles have changed the way we interact with the world around us. Our mission is to provide a "third space," outside of home and work, where children and families can nurture their love of play, learning, and socializing. In addition, we want to bring parents together so they can meet others in the same stage of life and form a modern “village” by swapping parenting hacks, getting the resources needed to thrive, and ideally creating lifelong friendships with neighbors in the community. It can be difficult for parents to meet each other with our busy lives, even when we live in the same neighborhood, and a goal of Bluemont Local is to provide a space for us all to connect more easily.
Bluemont Local combines multiple perspectives on child development, such as the Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Waldorf philosophies. We have integrated these approaches with our professional expertise in psychology and the latest research in this area. Our collaboration with health care providers from other disciplines, such as child development, physical therapy, and occupational therapy, allows us to tailor everything we do to your child’s needs.
We are thrilled to have found the perfect space for our dream in the up-and-coming Oakville neighborhood of Alexandria at 376A Calvert Avenue! This location provides incredible access to the nearby neighborhoods of Del Ray, Potomac Yard, and Oakville, and is a short drive from many cities in the DC area. Bluemont Local was constructed with the needs of kids in mind and includes an art corner, "book nook," lactation room, and party room/studio for classes. This is all in addition to our big play structure that is aesthetically pleasing to adults and not overstimulating for kids, while still being packed with many places to climb, explore, and play.
The name Bluemont Local pays tribute to the original train line that connected Washington, DC, to the village of Bluemont in Loudoun County, VA. We believe this name embodies the spirit of our vision to connect with others and create community across borders.
