As parents and residents of Alexandria for many years, we truly believe our city has a unique charm and magic due to its strong sense of community. Our vision for Bluemont Local emerged as we navigated major health challenges in our family and the difficulties of parenting two young children without nearby family support. This experience ignited a profound need for purpose, driving us to create a space where kids can feel a sense of belonging and parents do not feel alone. We feel lucky to combine this vision with our professional expertise in psychology, health and wellness, and child development to create an incredible space for children and families to play, learn, and connect!
More Than a Place to Play
Between busy schedules, work, and parenting, finding time to connect with other families can be challenging, even when we live just around the corner from one another.
Our vision is to create a third space beyond home and work, a place where families come together through play, learning, and shared experiences. We want Bluemont Local to be part of your village: a place to meet parents in the same stage of life, exchange parenting tips, discover helpful resources, find support, and build lasting friendships.

Thoughtfully Designed for Growing Minds
At Bluemont Local, we believe play is essential to childhood. Our approach draws inspiration from Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Waldorf philosophies, combining these perspectives with our professional expertise in psychology and child development and research-informed practices.
We value art, creativity, and hands-on exploration as essential parts of children's growth. Through open-ended creative experiences, children can develop fine motor skills, solve problems, express themselves, and nurture their imagination.
We are equally intentional about the materials children experience. Natural materials, particularly wood, offer rich sensory experiences through their unique textures, warmth, weight and natural variations. We also recognize growing scientific concern in microplastics and everyday exposure to plastics. By thoughtfully choosing materials and embracing natural alternatives where appropriate, we aim to create an environment that encourages meaningful play and a connection to the natural world.
Rooted in Alexandria, Connected by Community
We are proud to call Alexandria's Oakville neighborhood home. Located at 376A Calvert Avenue, Bluemont Local welcomes families from Oakville, Del Ray, Potomac Yard, and throughout the greater DC area.
Our name carries a special meaning. Bluemont Local pays tribute to the historic railway that connected Washington, DC, with the village of Bluemont in Loudoun County, Virginia. Just as that railway brought communities closer together, our name reflects our hope to connect families, build meaningful relationships, and strengthen the sense of belonging that makes a neighborhood feel like home.
